Fitzgerald paints Nick as a narrator and gives him certain qualities. The first one being is he is open-minded, we learn this in the first sentence of chapter 1. Nick says “My father gave me some advice that I have been turning over in my mind ever since”. The author uses an idiom phrase, “I have been turning over in my mind”. Meaning Nick has been thinking very deeply about his fathers advice. This shows he is open-minded because he has taken the advice and has turned it into a few different perspectives based on Nick being an open- minded person and thinking about his fathers words openly.

The second quality the author paints Nick to have  is the quality of being trustful. He says “I’m inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores”. When the author uses allusion to show that people tell Nick stories and he respects them by not judging them.
