Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter –tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… And one fine morning- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

1.The orgastic future represents Gatsbys hope for the future that he has huge expectations for. This relates to the green light that he thought his future would involve Daisy and him getting back together. However as time passes Gatsby slowly realises the truth of his future.

2.This line shows the idea of Gatsby chasing his dream of being with Daisy. The point being that you can chase your dream to a particular point where all of a sudden you think you are so close to your aim and you end up back at square 1. We cannot decide the future and neither could Gatsby. For example when he died in his pool at the end of the story, he thought he had Daisy, waiting for her call. He thought he was so close, and all at once his dream was snatched away from him in a matter of seconds. 

3. This line shows how once your dream is gone you must move on, because life goes on. However in Gatsbys case life didn’t go on for him. However the people he knew continued with their lives, selfishly not paying any tribute to their now deceased friend. Daisy moved on, in fact she moved away for a series of months, continuing life as a mother and wife as Gatsby did not exist. This was an example of Daisy beating on with life.

4. This line is outlining the fact that you cannot go back, no matter how hard you try life picks you up and takes you with it. What you do in the past will be existent forever.

The author uses many versions of allusion to show historical and literary references. Such as when Gatsby says, “I bought a dozen volumes on banking and credit and investment securities, and they stood on my shelf in red and gold like new money from the mint, promising to unfold the shining secrets that only Midas and Morgan and Maecenas knew.Midas, Morgan, and Maecenas were all wealthy menMidas was a King who granted a wish that made everything he touched turn to gold while, J.P. Morgan was a famous New York financer and  Maecenas was a counselor/adviser to the legendary Roman ruler who is commonly known as Octavian. All three of these characters represent The Great Gatsby because they all have a level of wealth but at the same time have greed.

The author uses the language feature called symbolism. The Valley Of Ashes symbolise the corruption of the American Dream. The ashes also symbolise death, with more selfish people arising from them. Every generation the pile increasing representing the American Dream. It is also representing the moral and social factors decreasing, resulting from wealth as the rich remain self centred to pleasure themselves. This shows corruption of the American Dream because it is meant to represent the idea of discovering happiness, it is impossible to achieve happiness in the Valley. This is because this dream has turned into the idea of money bringing happiness and the desire for wealth. Which is impossible for people living here to be happy as they dont make the amount of money they deserve considering the time and effort they put in.

The author also uses symbolism when he uses the idea of the green light and how it represents gatsbys hope for Daisy. Nick describes seeing Gatsby seeing him reaching towards the light. Grasping out for Daisys love to return to him again.
